6 Rue Jean Billaud – Visiting point 01

The construction of a maternity hospital separate from the main hospital was one of the very first achievements of its kind.
Marx Dormoy’s priorities were health and public sanitation, then commonly referred to as “hygiene.”
Completed in December 1927, the new maternity hospital was inaugurated in January 1928.
After one year of operation, it had admitted 137 women, 112 of them married and 25 unmarried mothers.
One third were admitted as indigent patients.
It was a source of great satisfaction that, in the first year, there was not a single death of a mother or newborn.
All of the buildings are designed by Paul Constant, with Marx Dormoy serving as deputy mayor. They house an orphanage and a nursery. It was only in 1927 that Marx Dormoy decided to build a maternity hospital. Marx Dormoy’s sister, Jeanne, was its director.
An administrative building was built at the rear, with its entrance on impasse Lancret.
The first floor housed the official residence of Jeanne and Marx Dormoy.
The maternity hospital was inaugurated in 1928.
